Thomas Schmidheiny is not a familiar name to most people around the world. He does have cement and concrete in his blood. His great-grandfather owned a brick factory, his grandfather worked in cement. Thomas inherited from his father Max a significant holding of Holcim, which is the second- largest supplier of cement and concrete in the world.
He ran the company for 25 years as the CEO and Chairman. Thomas was responsible for building up the company internationally. The firm is still growing having interests in Mexico, the UK and India aside from other countries around the world. He finally stepped down as chairman in 2003 but still holds 20 percent of the company and is involved with Holcim’s foundation.
Aside from cement his other passion has been in wine. Thomas owns wineries in Argentina, Switzerland, Australia, and in Napa Valley, California. The Swiss entrepreneur also owns a hotel in Switzerland.
While having been a successful businessman Thomas also has impressive academic credentials. He has an engineering degree from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, an MBA from IMD in Lausanne, Switzerland, and a PhD in business administration from Tufts University.
