Adi Godrej: Keeping A 100 Year Old Company Young

May 11, 2013 Business No Comments

Adi Godrej comes with impeccable academic credentials.  Born on April 3, 1942, he earned his undergraduate degree from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management and a member of Tau Beta Pi.  This kind of credentials is a ticket to a fast-track career in the corporate world. Adi instead returned to his native India.

He did this because his family owned the Godrej Group which was established by lawyer-turned-locksmith, Ardisher Godrej in 1897. Having been around for so long you can imagine the kind of prestige this business had. Like any business, it has to keep up with the times and produce products that the market wants.  Adi had a lot to do with turning the company around when he joined it at age 21.

Today the Godrej Group has 7 major companies involved in real estate, FMCG, industrial engineering, appliances, security and agri care. The organization’s turnover stands at around $3.3 billion. The company has now gone beyond India with 26 percent of its business done overseas.  The Godrej Group is present in over 60 countries.

Adi currently sits as chairman of the Godrej Group. With over five decades of entrepreneurial work he has held numerous positions in prestigious organizations and has been cited many times for his business achievements. One thing for sure he knows how to keep the “old” Godrej Group “young” and relevant.
